Who Makes The Best Pocket Knives Today?
I have done an extensive review on the best pocket knives that I believe are top notch in today’s market. Since I was a boy I have always loved owning and having a pocket knife. I have owned many, have lost a few, swapped others and even had teachers and my parents confiscate a few.
Now that I am grown up (well not according to my wife) I can now indulge in something that I have always loved and I now have an extensive range of different pocket knives that I have collected over the years. Yes I am one of those people who have carved their names in many places, including certain places that I shouldn’t have, but that was back in the day.
I guess I like gadgets of all kinds and knives have always been something that I have loved. There are so many available today that it is really hard to pick out the good ones from the bad. That is what I have attempted to do here.
I hope that you find my list of what I think are the best informative and helpful.
Pocket Knife Buying Guide
Key Knife Features To Look For
When it comes to buying a knife you really do have to consider what you will be using it for. I believe that it is something that you can carry around comfortably and conveniently in a jacket or trouser pocket and is actually of some practical use.
In or Out of the Pocket?
Some people like me are fine with carrying this in their pocket but some like to attach this to a belt. If you are one of those then make sure that the attachment is strong and sturdy. Cheap models will have badly made circular attachments that will just break and you will lose the knife eventually.
Does Size Matter?
It does for me. I want something that fits into my pocket and at the same time is not too long that it is just uncomfortable. The perfect size for that is around 2-4″ long and no bigger than that.
What Tools Do You Want?
Is it just a sharp blade that is important? Do you want it to have scissors? Would a small screwdriver be handy?
There are other gadget type things like nail files, tweezers etc which I suppose all have their place. I have used the nail file for removing a few sharp edges when gardening which is probably not what it was designed for.
Another popular gadget on some knives is a bottle opener for pretty obvious reasons.
Victorinox Swiss Army Classic SD Pocket Knife
Highly Popular Best Selling Pocket Knife
These have been around for years and to this day remain the highest selling of all pocket knives. The brand “Victorinox” from Switzerland is known throughout the world for quality and is indeed an icon in the world of knives. I checked how long these have been in existence and the first one was made way back in 1897.
It was American service personnel that called this the “Swiss Army Knife”.
Karl Elsener made the first one and named it after his mother Victoria. The “inox” at the end stands for stainless steel.
The little symbol lets you know that it is the Swiss brand and there have been many variants made of this particular knife. The one I have highlighted here is the original and classic.
This also comes in a variety of colours but again the red one in the opening photographs is still the classic colour of this wonderful knife. Today it comes in:
- Emerald Green
- Hunter Green
- Shamrock Green
- Cobalt Blue
- Boy Scout
- Star of David
- Perfect for all round use including campers and hikers
- Measures 2.3″ long and weighs under 1 ounce
- Lifetime Warranty
- Has a small knife, screwdriver, tweezers, small scissors and even a tooth pick
Schrade IMP16S Imperial Stainless Steel 3 Blade Pocket Knife
Great Price and Great Quality
I would describe this one as the best “first” pocket knife you could buy for anyone. As I mentioned earlier there are so many choices to make when it comes to buying one of these. This one from Schrade ticks all the boxes for a simple three blade knife that young people will love.
It looks great and I think stands out well from many of the others. The blades are sharp and it is easy to open and close the blades. Some people did have problems opening and closing the blades but to be honest I prefer the blades to be stiff otherwise they just become loose and floppy.
It is also a handy knife to keep in your tool box as it will do a variety of handy jobs. If you are stuck for an idea for Father’s day or a birthday then this one will fit the bill nicely.
- Good quality small lightweight pocket knife
- Makes a great present that men and boys would actually want
- For the price it is amazing value
Kershaw Ken Onion Leek Folding Knife with Speed Safe
Best One Handed Pocket Knife Available
if you have to use a knife and have only one hand available then this is the magic of this knife. it doesn’t matter if you are left or right handed this one will do your job. I have come across many times when I just needed to get the knife open quickly and use it. The best example I can think of is fishing where you want to cut the line quickly and just can not let go of the line. You certainly don’t want to be fumbling around trying to open a knife.
This knife is made by Ken Onion hence the name, and the “Leek” is the brand name for a series of these knives. I picked this particular one because I like the stainless steel handle but other types of handles are available. These come in:
- Red Smoked
- Pink Leek
I am just a bit of a traditionalist and prefer the steel look. They all come with a belt clip and a thumb stud for easy opening. It uses a technology known as “Speedsafe” but this should not be confused with either a flick knife or a switch blade which I would not recommend.
Some states in the USA do not allow this knife to be sold so before buying please check your own state laws on that.
- Really fast to open with either hand
- Stainless steel handle and steel blade
- Measures 4″ when closed and weighs 3 ounces
Best Brand of Pocket Knives
There are a number of well know brands that make knives and they have been established for a very long time. If you are someone who likes to buy because of a brand name, then you can be pretty sure that you are going to get a good quality blade.
You will also be pretty certain that this will be a knife that will last for a very long time indeed. Typically the best brands will always have better and longer guarantees and also a much better standard of customer service. These are the leading brands that I am aware of in this particular market:
- Cold Steel
- Buck Knives
- W.R.Case and Sons Cutlery (Known as Case Cutlery)
